
The General Assembly is made up of 191 Member States (including the United Republic of Tanzania). The United Republic of Tanzania participates actively in the plenary meetings and all six main committees of the General Assembly. The six main committees of the General Assembly are: The General Assembly is chaired by a President who presides over a session to which he is elected. Tanzania has had one Presidency. Dr. Salim A. Salim held the Presidency in the General Assembly on the following occasions: 34th Regular session 1979-1980 6th Emergency session January 1980 on the situation in Afghanistan 7th Emergency session July 1980 on the question of Palestine 11th Special session on Critical Economic Situation of many developing countries
